Fort Meyers

–A food/travel photographic journal–

Our Florida journey started in Fort Meyers. We spent a chill day at Sanibel beach picking shells and hanging out. But before that, I had the best key lime pie ever in my life.

ftmeyers01We arrived in Fort Meyers early afternoon, and we want to grab a quick bite before heading to the beach. We found this restaurant- the Standard on Main Street with petty food review on Yelp, and decided to pay a visit. The shrimp grit and fish taco were decent. The waitress did warn me about the spicy level of the taco, but it still got me. We were not going to get dessert, but the waitress talked us into getting the key lime pie. Turns out she is absolutely right. We really need to thank her. It was a gigantic piece, crust and the custard are both perfect. The fresh, fluffy whipped cream has the right amount of creaminess, not to mention the tang, to complement the pie’s sweetness. The custard itself is quite fluffy as well, unlike most other places we had on this trip (later in our trip, we visited several places in Key West). Because of its airiness, the custard doesn’t feel as condense and heavy. The crust feels more like crumbles than of a hard pressed concrete crust. It is more like a thin layer of puff cookies crumbs. Despite its look, the pie was quite light. And yes, I wish there were more crust, just cos I love cookies.

    SANIBEL BEACH

One of the must see places in Fort Meyers is Sanibel beach. Not the sandy beach one would think it is. The most fascinate thing about the place is that it is covered by sea shell. Try walking without shoes or flip flop would not only hurt your toe and feet, you might even cut yourself walking. We thread carefully, shell picking. towards the south end of the beach we discover a circle of shells. Well someone built this awesome piece and everyone who walked by just stared at it with awe, and no one want to disturb its greatness. Although I didn’t build it, but my pictures certainly benefit from it. Whoever built this, whoever you are, salute!

After spending much time admiring this magnificent shell “structure”, we craved for ice-cream. On our way heading back into town, our friend took us to Pinnochios, a local ice-cream shop. The long line wrapped around the store and loop to outside, but it moves rather quickly. There are a lot of choices, and as we approached closer to the counter, the pressure is on. I always find myself indecisive at ice cream store. Finally, my eyes got caught, KEY LIME!!! The choice became obvious.

It is actually sorbet not ice cream. But this has a little more solid texture compare to other sorbet . And the sourness vs sweetness balanced very well. It is light and refreshing. Great find by my friend. I wish I can ship a tub of it home. Until next time…..
